Australian Landmarks – And How To Get There

Here in Australia we’re blessed with more than our fair share of iconic landmarks. Known the world over, structures like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House really put our country on the map. They’re the first place the tourists head for after the plane touches down. And with good reason, they’re incredible buildings. But what about the other landmarks, the places that aren’t so easy to find? These are the spots that take a little more imagination to seek out, but the rewards are always spectacular and worth the effort.

Ok, so Uluru (Ayers Rock) is hardly a secret. It would be hard to keep something that huge under wraps but how many of you have actually been there? It might be a bit of a trek but at 348 metres high and nine kilometres round the base it’s definitely unique. The part that shows above ground is only one third of the rock’s total size, making it one of the largest monoliths in the world. Now known by its traditional name, it’s listed as a world heritage site due to its natural and cultural significance.

The Great Barrier Reef, located off the coast of Queensland, is also hardly just our secret any more. It’s so large it can be seen from space, so even the astronauts know it’s there! At 2,000 km long and made up of 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands, it’s the world’s largest structure made by living organisms. It’s large enough for everyone to find his or her own secluded spot to view it. So jump in the car and strike out for your own little piece of paradise.

The Bungle Bungles have been familiar to Aboriginal Australians for centuries but were not really known to the rest of the world until the 1980s. Formed over millions of years, these beehive-shaped, coloured-banded mountains rise up to 300 m above the grass plains.

The Horizontal Falls near Port Talbot in Western Australia are a natural phenomenon caused by large tidal surges squeezing through tiny gaps in the high cliff wall. They’re really special and one of the great marvels of the Australian countryside. But with limited car access you’re going to need the right off-road vehicle.

That’s what links all these great Australian adventures – the need for the right vehicle. Driving outside the city in Oz can get tough, so you’ll need an even tougher vehicle - even an ordinary 4x4 might not cut it on some of these tracks. A Jeep® Cherokee or Cherokee Sport is ideal as they’re built to handle more extreme off-road conditions. So load up and head out, safe in the knowledge you’re about to see something that most people never will.
