Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a mood disorder where people have normal mental health throughout the year but at certain times or during certain seasons, they have depressive periods. The condition was first described and named by Norman E. Rosenthal in 1984 at the National Institute of Mental Health. SAD is also commonly known as winter blues or winter depression because by far the most common symptoms are a slump in well being during the winter months.
