Jeep Grand Cherokee Off-Road Performance

You can expect to Go Anywhere, Do Anything in a Jeep® vehicle, thanks to over 69 years of tried and true off-road craftsmanship. Grand Cherokee has two capable 4WD systems to choose from: Quadra-Trac II® and Quadra-Drive II®.

Quadra-Trac II features a two-speed transfer case with multiple sensors to detect tyre slip, which can direct as much as 100 percent of available torque to the axle with the most traction. The system also uses throttle sensors to detect quick movement in the throttle when the vehicle accelerates from rest, then actively manages torque application to maximise traction before tyre slippage occurs.

The available Quadra-Drive II integrates the Quadra-Trac II dual-range transfer case with a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD) to deliver industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tyre slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to wheels with traction. In some cases, the vehicle uses multiple sensor inputs to anticipate low traction situations and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

Quadra-Lift

Available on Grand Cherokee is the all new Quadra-Lift air suspension system(2). This closed-type air suspension design allows you to adjust your vehicle's suspension height to augment the vehicle's inherent capabilities. It's closed-type design allows it to adjust far faster and more quietly than open-type systems.

Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually using the convenient console controls to match your driving needs.
The Quadra-Lift system features five height settings for optimum rise performance:

  • Normal Ride Height: 205 mm of clearance offers improved fuel economy as well as excellent aerodynamics during every-day driving
  • Off-Road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 33 mm for added height to clear obstacles (238 mm total) when off the beaten track
  • Off-Road 2: Enhances Jeep's legendary off-road capability by providing an additional 66 mm of clearance above the normal ride height (271 mm total)
  • Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle 13 mm from normal ride height. Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts automatically for optimal performance and fuel economy (192 mm total)
  • Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 38 mm from normal ride height to allow for easy ingress/egress and loading items onto roof racks (167 mm total)

Selec-Terrain

With an easy turn of a dial, your Grand Cherokee's traction control is adjusted to match the driving conditions facing you on the road ahead or beyond the black stump. Five selectable settings electronically coordinate up to twelve different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shifting, transfer case, traction control, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

The Selec-Terrain system offers five different driving modes to achieve the best driving experience and traction on all terrains:

  • Auto: Automatically chooses the mode to suited to changing on- or off-road situations
  • Sand/Mud: Traction Control and Quadra-Lift (if equipped) operate with sensitive response to wheel spin
  • Rock: The Quadra-Lift air suspension system (if equipped) raises to a maximum height of 271 mm, while the transfer case, differentials and throttle co-ordinate to provide low-speed control
  • Sport: Provides enhanced on-road "fun-to-drive" capability with enhanced torque-split and aerodynamics
  • Snow: Vehicle adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads by maximising stability and minimising oversteer

Angles

Jeep legendary Jeep 4x4 capability is evident with Grand Cherokee's 271 mm of ground clearance, 34-degree approach angle(1) , 23-degree breakover angle and 27-degree departure angle, when equipped with Quadra-Lift air suspension in Off-Road II.
