Multi-Displacement System
MDS

Multi-Displacement System (MDS) provides full-rated power in V8 form with a 12 to 15 percent fuel economy benefit when operating in four-cylinder mode, depending on driving habits and vehicle usage. Fuel economy will be 8-15 percent higher than if the engine was operating on eight cylinders at all times Through calibration and refinement, transitions between four - and eight-cylinder modes are virtually imperceptible to the driver.

MDS is integrated into the basic engine architecture, requiring a minimum of additional parts: four solenoids, an oil temperature sensor and a wire harness. Eight unique valve lifters and a modified camshaft are also requried. This makes the system more reliable than add-on systems.

5.7L HEMI® V8 Engine

The 5.7L HEMI V8 engine was available for the first time ever on a Jeep brand vehicle - the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Now also optional on the Jeep Commander Limited, the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine on both models provides 90 percent of peak torque from 2400 to 5100 rpm. The torque curve and power deliver excellent performance for city driving, highway cruising, travelling off-road or towing a trailer. The engine features MDS, which deactivates half of the eight cylinders during cruising and light acceleration, increasing fuel economy depending upon driving conditions, whilst providing full-rated power in V8 form.
